Most significant bit
Alternatively referred to as the alt bit, high bit, meta bit, or senior bit the most significant bit is the highest bit in a series of numbers in binary, located at the far left of a string. For example, in the number 01001001, the most significant bit is the 0 at the beginning of the line.
