MYSQL

VARCHAR(M)

Description

VARCHAR holds a variable length string (containing letters, numbers, and/or special characters).

The variable size is specified in parenthesis and can be between 0 to 65,535 characters. This length indicates the maximum number of characters that can be stored.

Note: VARCHAR values are not padded when they are stored. Trailing spaces are retained when values are stored and retrieved, in conformance with standard SQL.

Examples

The following example shows the basic use of this data type:

mysql> CREATE TABLE t1
  (v VARCHAR(4), c CHAR(4));
mysql> INSERT INTO t1
  VALUES ('12  ', '12  ');
mysql> SELECT
  CONCAT('(', v, ')'),
  CONCAT('(', c, ')') FROM t1;
+-------------+--------------+
| (12  )      | (12)         |
+-------------+--------------+
