STR_TO_DATE()


Description

The STR_TO_DATE( ) function returns the date and time of a given string for a given format. The function takes a string containing a date or time, or both.

This function has the form:

SELECT STR_TO_DATE(datetime, 'format_code')
Parameter Description
datetime A string representing a date and/or time
'format_code' Specifies a string of formatting codes used to decode the datetime string. These are the same codes used by the DATE_FORMAT( ) function

Return Value

The date and time of a given string for a given format.

Examples

The following example shows the basic use of this function:

mysql> SELECT STR_TO_DATE('01,5,2013','%d,%m,%Y');
    -> '2013-05-01'
mysql> SELECT STR_TO_DATE('May 1, 2013','%M %d,%Y');
    -> '2013-05-01'
